Creating a Map for the Server?

My thought on this is simply an idea. I see we find other made maps and bring them over,though what about creating our own maps? Is this possible? <--- I know it is, and IS it all code or is there some visual map creator? Allowing us to add our own landscape, structures, objects?
If someone can lead me into the knowledge of doing it---I would spend some time on it*
